Racing in the Mud
Have you ever felt the adrenaline rush of racing down a track, running 110 mph in a quarter mile? Now, picture running that fast on a 240 ft track of mud that is about 18inches deep. It is exquisite.
There are several tracks located in Texas. If you have never seen it, it is definitely a sight worth seeing. In San Antonio, Texas, there is a track located off of 37 south and 1604. You can look it up at http://www.muddraggs.com. The classes range from stock to blown. Not every truck is going to be pushing 110 out the finish line, but there are a few.
Now, there is another track opening just west of San Antonio, between Hondo and Castroville on Highway 90, Medina Valley Muddrags. At this time, there is no web site for this track, but if you would like more information, you can contact Clifton at 210-289-2747. This track is located directly off of Highway 90, and will be having the first race on Memorial Day weekend.
Up by Houston, there is another track located in Bay city. You can view information regarding this track at www.muddrag.com. This track runs opposite weekends of the San Antonio Muddrags track.
In South Texas, there is the River Grand Valley Mud track, rgv.muddrags.com. It is located in Los Fresnos. I have not been to this track, yet, but it will be running this coming weekend, and we may just make it there.
As you can see there are several named here in this article, and several more that I have left out, due to the fact that they do not run consistently. Some just run a few times a year, like memorial day weekend, 4th of July and Labor Day.
The winnings depend on the amount of trucks in the class, and the type of class. Some of the faster classes pay a set rate, because these trucks make their show more exhilarating. Be prepared to make a run for it when they come flying down the track, as the mud flies with them. It is best to stand further back away from the track so you don't miss the race. It is over with-in seconds. Literally.
Mud Racing is an extreme sport. If you want to try it, I suggest starting out slow. Most people start with a stock truck. This is a vehicle that is street legal. It can be any four wheel drive vehicle, as long as it is legal. The super stock class is similar, but you are allowed two modifications, I believe. If you are interested, check out the websites given above, as they have class rules. This will give you more of an idea of what you will be seeing, and what to expect.
All of these tracks also have a quad class. They start the races running four-wheelers (atv's) and sometimes you will see some people bring dirt bikes. There is even a class for children's racing on four wheelers.
For those of you that have never seen this style of racing, check it out. It is a lot of fun, and a great hobby, filled with adrenaline!
